Belarus is building a nuclear power plant near the town of Ostrovets in the Grodno region under the Russian VVER-1200 project. It will consist of two power units with a capacity of 1200 MW each. The Ministry of Energy of Belarus reported that it is planned to ensure the commissioning of the first power unit of the Belarusian NPP in 2020, and the second - in 2021. The General contractor for the construction of the NPP is Atomstroyexport (Rosatom structure).
Lithuania has been making claims against the Belarusian NPP almost since the Minsk decision on its construction, claiming that the station will not be safe enough. Belarus insists that the nuclear power plant will meet the highest safety standards.
