The US Will Not Give Up Trying To Extend The UN Arms Embargo Against Iran
American diplomats still believe in the ability to convince partners in the UN Security Council of the need to extend the arms embargo against Iran, said the head of the US state Department Mike Pompeo.
"We will do everything possible to achieve an extension of the arms embargo, "he said at a news conference in Washington, noting that the US "will use all available diplomatic tools" to do this.
In turn, the First Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Vladimir Jabarov, told Interfax that the United States would not be able to impose an arms embargo against Iran "at a meeting."
"The prospects for the introduction of an arms embargo against Iran are still unclear. I think that same China may have objections. Against the background of the trade war that the Americans have unleashed, they may not support this resolution," Jabarov said.
He believes that the issue will require negotiations of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
"Now the meeting of the sanctions may not pass, as it was before," Jabarov said.
The arms embargo expires in October 2020. Us Ambassador to the UN Kelly Kraft this summer suggested that Russia and China could veto the extension of restrictive measures.
