Sergey Lavrov Announced The Imminent Completion Of The Nord Stream 2 Pipeline

All participants in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline are determined to complete it, and there is reason to believe that this will happen very shortly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

Commenting on the US intention to impose sanctions on the project participants, Lavrov said that this shows "how Washington operates in the international arena, not shy of any methods, which is confirmed by the situation around the Nord Stream 2."

"It is publicly stated that the US will stop Nord Stream 2 at any cost because the US is committed to ensuring Europe's energy security. If our European partners are ready to give the solution to their security issues, whether it is energy, or in any other sphere, to the United States, then this is their decision," the Minister said.

Moscow sees that the German position is different, he added.

He recalled that Washington believes that the US provides security to Germany, while Germany pays billions to Russia, and called it "a strong distortion."

Maas told Interfax that in Europe, they decide where to buy gas and how to ensure energy security and diversify sources.

Sanctions against the Gazprom project to deliver gas to Germany were included in the US defense budget for the 2020 fiscal year, and in December 2019, forced the all seas pipelayer to urgently stop work. The draft military budget for the next fiscal year is currently being prepared in Congress, and it also includes sanctions against Nord Stream 2.
