The Head Of The European Commission Demanded New Sanctions For Belarus

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen believes that additional sanctions are necessary against those who violated human rights and democratic values in Belarus. She tweeted this before the meeting of the EU foreign Ministers on Belarusian events.

Von der Leyen is confident that the EU will show strong support for the rights of the people of Belarus to fundamental freedoms and democracy.

The Ministers will discuss the situation in Belarus on August 14 in the afternoon via video link. It is assumed that the possibility of introducing new sanctions will be discussed.

On August 13, the EU high representative for foreign Affairs, Josep Borrel, called on the Belarusian authorities to stop the violence, release all those illegally detained, and engage in a dialogue with the public. Otherwise, he threatened to review relations with Belarus and sanctions.

Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said that Minsk is ready for the discussion.
