Producer Backing Indie Film with Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek (EXCLUSIVE) -

The producer of Rust is backing a new independent film, Sam & Kate, which stars Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek, and will begin production in the next year.

Ryan Smith is helping finance the film, which will shoot in Thomasville, Ga., starting in mid-ff February. A source close to the project said that Smith will take part in a portion of the financing and get an executive producer credit, but that he isn't going to be involved in physical production.

The two lawsuits are filed against Smith, his partner Allen Cheney and his company, Thomasville Pictures, who have been named in two suits arising from the fatal shooting of the movie "Rust" last month in New Mexico. During the shooting, Alec Baldwin shot and killed the cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded the director of that film. The film has shut down indefinitely.

The investigation was centered on the case of the shooting of a two-year-old sniper, the 24-year old, and the claims of his failure to remark the stunt to Baldwin. The lawsuits allege that the production had gotten drained and hired inexperienced crew members, which led to dangerous conditions on set.

Thomasville Pictures was one of several production companies on the project. Some crew members on Thomasas previous projects have also come forward with allegations of unsafe practices and also have alleged that the productions didn't pay people on time.

Cheney is a native of Thomasville, whose population is about 19,000 people. His company has brought dozens of low-budget productions to the city in recent years, including Supercell and Bandit, which also starred Baldwin, The Tiger Rising, and with Dennis Quaid and Queen Latifah; and "One Way, with Travis Fimmel and Machine Gun Kelly.

Darren Le Gallo and Amy Adams are due to appear as father and daughter. Spacek and her daughter, Schuyler Fisk, will play a mother and son, respectively.

The films co-executive producer, Ford Corbett, is also credited on Sam & Kate.

The tourism and film director of Thomasville said the producers had initially talked about Sam and Kate in the city, but they haven't yet filled out a permit application.

She said she hadn't had a problem with them.
