Luke ONeil may be a freshman at Boring. His best friends are McQuaid, a pessimistic genius, and Tyler Bowen, an immature youngster with a high-pitched voice.

But Kate starts to question her sexuality and has a crush on Emaline Addario, a drama student who reportedly matches Oliver Schermerhorn. When people at school say she is gay, Kate starts dating Luke.

Kates carelessness with the sets causes the play to be ended. Luke and his friends suggest that the A/V Club and Drama Club work together to produce a film that could then be shown to the whole school. Luke, however, found VHS tapes that his father made before he and his mother left him and his mother years ago.

Luke''s mother, Sherry, brings closer to Kate''s father, Ken Messner, who is also the director of Boring. Kate is struggling with her identity and sexuality, Tyler is concerned about his father''s interest in girls, and McQuaid is unable to serve as Emaline until she gets rejected.
