D&Ds The Yawning Portal inn is the setting for a Diner Dash-esque boardgame

Since Dungeons & Dragons 5E decided to explore the Forgotten Realms, the Yawning Portal has been a well-established location. Now, the inn-cum-dungeon entrance will be the setting of an upcoming board game that borrows heavily from diner video games.

The Yawning Portal, which was completely titled, was created during Gen Con 2022 by publisher Avalon Hill. One to four players will join the inns wait staff and serve meals to hungry adventurers who apparently have extremely specific diet preferences. The goal is to gain the most gems as guidance for a successful job by the end of the game.

As anyone who has previously served food service will attest, the work is much more difficult than it might appear in this board game iteration. These heroic patrons will gradually fill out the 14 available seats and bring with them a hunger that must be satisfied with certain dishes and drinks, according to a vegetarian dwarf.

Players will use hand cards to fulfill heroes orders and place food tokens on the long table for the clientele to grab. Points are awarded for every portion of a total order fulfilled, and bonuses come from purchasing a meal ticket. However, these shortcuts are limited and difficult to follow.

This is a relatively simple set of techniques that will be useful to anyone who has played a Diner Dash-esque video game on consoles or, particularly, mobile devices. The Yawning Portal claims to sift the formula by granting the highest point total to the gem colour that appears the most on the board. This will ostensibly lead to situations where multiple players may compete to serve the most meat, fish, veggies, or beer. So, what is the difference between the two?

Yawning Portal believes it is an approachable board game for D&D veterans who may have played the campaign set within its walls as well as newcomers. This is very much a standalone board game for those who prefer the mechanics or general high fantasy aesthetics.

The Yawning Portal is currently planning an early release date for 2023, with Hasbro predicting an approximate shipping date for March 1st. Pre-orders for the box are now available on the Hasbro Pulse website and will cost $59.99.
