They later give birth to a group of chillingly unusual children (see picture below) that are aware of these strange children. They end up dividing loyalties and ruining lives both within the town and beyond, and it needs a horrifying sacrifice to avoid them causing a global catastrophe.

More from Keeley Hawes on staring in The Midwich Cuckoos as Dr Susannah Zellaby

"It''s a huge success for many people," Keeley Hawes said of the "finalized" book. I hadn''t read it, and because I read it fresh, I just thought, "Oh my gosh, you know this, it''s really horrifying!" Whether you''re a mother or not, it''s relatable to everybody this notion of having something inside you, not knowing what it is. It''s quite awful.

"Susannah and her daughter Cassie have an interesting relationship. Susannah is a child psychologist, so it''s doubly difficult for her to be a child psychologist. However, she is unable to assist her own, especially with mental health issues and addiction."

John Wyndham, the author of The Midwich Cuckoos, has been given a brief guide.

After spending World War Two as a firewatcher during the Blitz, a censor in the Ministry of Information, and a member of the Home Guard, John Wyndham wrote his most iconic piece in 1951. The story explores the world by gazeing at a meteor shower which allows poisonous giant plants, the Triffids, to take control of the planet.

There was a 1963 film adaptation of Howard Keel (of Dallas fame) and Nicole Maurey and Janette Scott, as well as a 1981 version by the BBC, featuring John Duttine. In 2009, the BBC produced yet another version of starring Dougray Scott, Jason Priestley, Eddie Izzard, and Joely Richardson.

John Wyndham is famous for his books (opens in a new tab) about a mysterious tsunami and brutal shipping by unknown aliens from the deep. Wyndham''s novel (opens in a new tab) was also written a year before his death in 1969. A television adaptation of the latter was also shown on ITV in 1984, and featuring James Hazeldine and Carol Drinkwater.

The Midwich Cuckoos'' two famous film adaptations, Village Of The Damned, have been condemned.

The eerie 1960 black and white version, directed by Wolf Rilla, featured George Sanders, Barbara Shelley, and Laurence Naismith, who were waiting around the screen to see it. In 1995 the film (see our main picture) was given a Hollywood horror remake by Halloween filmmaker John Carpenter. It featured actor Christopher Reeve, Kirstie Alley, and Mark Hamill, with glowing orange eyes and otherworldly powers.
