Following the TGS closing ceremonies in 2022, the Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association, which organized the Tokyo Game Show, has issued a new press release. It disclosed that a total of 138,192 people visited the physical venue over the course of four days between September 15 and 2022.
The following are the detailed attendance numbers for each day. Note that the first two days were intended for members of the game industry and the press. CESA permitted the public to enter the venue from Friday at 14:00 (2 PM) JST.
- Thursday, September 15, 2022: 23,051
- Friday, September 16, 2022: 27,614 (21,066 businesspeople + 6,548 public visitors)
- Saturday, September 17, 2022: 47,236
- Sunday, September 18, 2022: 40,291
The last TGS iteration with a physical event prior to 2022 occurred in 2019. CESA recorded 262,076 visitors at the Tokyo Game Show 2019. TGS 2022 recorded slightly more than half the attendance number when compared to 2019. The 2018 edition still holds the highest attendance record at 298,690 visitors.
The Tokyo Game Show in 2021 had only 1,574 physical visitors. Despite a significant decrease from 2019, the global COVID-19 epidemic halted physical events. In the end of the 2021 edition, the organizer organized a limited physical event where only authorized influencers and members of the press could attend.
Foreign visitors also play an important role in the attendance count. In the last months, the Japanese government began accepting non-scorted visitors with a licensed sponsor or travel agency. However, the situation has still not returned to the pre-pandemic years.
The CESA has confirmed the dates for the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in 2023 at the same press conference. The Japanese game event will take place on September 21-24 in 2023.
Andrew, a one-time Siliconeras writer, was also present at the Tokyo Game Show 2022 at the Makuhari Messe. On the first two days, Andrews recorded several game demos.
