PlayStation Plus should be used to manage the lifecycle of a game, according to Shuhei Yoshida

Shuhei Yoshida, Sony''s head of PlayStation Indies, believes PS Plus should be used by publishers in order to manage the game''s lifecycle.

Yoshida discusses Sony''s approach to a subscription service at GI Live, reaffirming that the company still believes in the "premium release of a title at the start."

Sony is yet to adopt a different approach with PS Plus, which gives developers and publishers greater value.

"The new PS Plus has tiers, and essentially it''s like the previous PS Plus, but we still release two or three new games every month, and another tier, Extra, has a number of hundreds of games for everybody," Yoshida said.

"For Extra, our strategy [is] to assist publishers [with] lifecycle management. I was working first-party [at PlayStation], so I know that it''s like in movies - a movie comes out at the theatre first, then goes to pay per view, or a subscription service, or free TV, every time, generating new revenue and reaching out to a wider audience.

"In the same kind of way, we believe in the premium release of a title at the launch and after maybe six months, or three months, or three years, when the game''s sales come down, inclusion in this service, PS Plus Extra, can assist introduce these games to new, larger audience. If there''s a DLC or a sequel going, we can increase interest to a wider audience.

"So we are empowering publishers to make use of these services in managing the lifecycle of each title," he said.

Like Microsoft with Game Pass, Sony has been adamant that no new PS Plus games will be added on day one.

When PS Plus was announced, "we feel like we are in a good virtuous phase with the studios," said PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, "where the investment delivers success, which allows yet more investment, which leads to even greater success." We like that cycle, and we believe our gamers are happy about it.

"We would think that if we [add games on day one] with the PlayStation Studios games, the transaction will be broken. We believe that the level of investment that we need to make in our studios would not be feasible, and that the impact on the quality of the games we produce would not be desired by gamers."

Players have speculated on when the first party games might be added to the service since its launch. Returnal, the Director''s Cut, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake were all added a year after the initial launch.

Yoshida''s remarks demonstrate that this all depends on the lifecycle of each game.
