Nvidia''s GeForce RTX 40 series series series is coming soon with only the highest RTX 4090 and two flavours of RTX 4080, although Nvidia believe that the performance and feature improvements of the 40 series Ada Lovelace architecture will make them worthwhile investments. Especially with the help of DLSS 3, a new and significantly upgraded version of Nvidia''s DLSS upscaler that will only work with RTX 40 series GPUs at launch.

While AMD''s next-generation RDNA 3/Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs will apparently focus on efficiency improvements, the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 are all about focusing on power and AI-aided performance tricks. For the time being, here''s everything you need to know about the confirmed cards so far.

This may as well go out of the way quickly, as the RTX 40 series pricing is (thus far) pretty wince-worthy:

There are quite a few differences between the 12GB and 16GB RTX 4080s that extend beyond simply how much memory they had in the ol'''' noggin. In addition, the RTX 4090 now has the same quoted power usage and PSU wattage requirement as the mighty RTX 3090 Ti, although the possibility of upgrading the latter is limited to one of the four.

Ada Lovelace appoints a significant architectural gain over the RTX 30 series Ampere design. Both of the RT and Tensor cores (which enable ray tracing and AI/machine learning tools like DLSS, respectively), have both been redesigned to be faster and more efficient. Both of the four points, from Ampere, are similar to those used by the CUDA cores, as those used for everyday game running are higher across the board.

Nvidia say this can improve overall performance with RT reduced by up to 25% to Ampere, which would not eliminate the FPS tax in most games but would certainly improve the running time.

RTX 40 GPUs will include AV1 encoding capabilities as standard. This will not only make your games run faster, but it is good news if youe into livestreaming or creating games clips from games footage. The AV1 format resembles the one real USP of their long-overdue Arc Alchemist graphics cards. So much for that disadvantage.

What is the RTX Remix, and what does it have to do with the RTX 40 series?

Nvidia''s new RTX Remix app has been launched for the RTX 4090/RTX 4080 release. Perhaps not, RTX Remix might be a major hit for upgrading previous PC games.

In a way, RTX Remix uses Ada Lovelaces'' AI and machine learning capabilities to simplify the process of creating HD mod packs for older games. With it, modders can import a game into the app and capture assets (like textures, geometry, and lighting) with a few clicks. These assets are then auto-converted into the USD file format, allowing the modder to make changes using RTX Remix''s various tools.

These include AI-powered texture tools that can upscale textures by up to 4x, or detect what type of material an old texture will represent, such as wood, metal, or otherwise, and automatically provide them with an appropriate, more detailed roughness or shininess. Through the use of RTX Remix to other applications, like Blender, Maya, Photoshop, and Adobe Substance, it is possible to create whole new models and see them take shape inside the mod in real time.

RTX Remix will export everything as a mod pack, which only needs to be unpacked in the same folder as the games.exe to launch. This is because the only prerequisites, according to Nvidia, are that the games are based on DirectX 8 or 9 and use a fixed function graphics pipeline.
