Prices, specs, release dates, and more for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series

Nvidia''s GeForce RTX 40 series series series is coming soon with only the highest RTX 4090 and two flavours of RTX 4080, although Nvidia believe that the performance and feature improvements of the 40 series Ada Lovelace architecture will make them worthwhile investments. Especially with the help of DLSS 3, a new and significantly upgraded version of Nvidia''s DLSS upscaler that will only work with RTX 40 series GPUs at launch.

While AMD''s next-generation RDNA 3/Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs will apparently focus on efficiency improvements, the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 are all about focusing on power and AI-aided performance tricks. For the time being, here''s everything you need to know about the confirmed cards so far.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series prices

This may as well go out of the way quickly, as the RTX 40 series pricing is (thus far) pretty wince-worthy:

  • RTX 4080 12GB: 949 / $899
  • RTX 4080 16GB: 1269 / $1199
  • RTX 4090: 1679 / $1599

For comparison, the RTX 3080 was initially priced at 649 / $699, while the RTX 3090 was $1400 / $1500, and since these are Nvidia''s starting prices, the majority of board partners will set you back even more. The RTX 4090 and the 16GB version of the RTX 4080 will have Nvidia-designed Founders Edition models, which will sell at the listed prices, but the cheapest 12GB RTX 4080 might easily break the

Asus, Colorful, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Inno3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, and Zotac are all developing their own RTX 40 series models. Not EVGA, mind, who is completely devoting the graphics card business, citing uncooperative practices on the Nvidias part.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series release dates

The RTX 4090 will be on sale on October 12th 2022; heres hoping that for anyone who wants to drop the money straight away, its less of a teeth-grinding launch day than the RTX 3080 had when it sold out in seconds in 2020.

At the time of writing, there was no specific RTX 4080 release date, although Nvidia predict both the 12GB and 16GB versions will be released in November. If there is an RTX 4070 or RTX 4060 in the works, please do not expect them for a while.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series specs

The two versions of the 12GB and 16GB RTX 4080s GPU aren''t technically accurate, but the 12GB model is based on a different underlying Ada Lovelace chip, the Nvidia AD104, to the 16GB RTX 4080 and its AD103 processor. You can see in this specs table how the two compare in full, along with the AD102-based RTX 4090.

There are quite a few differences between the 12GB and 16GB RTX 4080s that extend beyond simply how much memory they had in the ol'''' noggin. In addition, the RTX 4090 now has the same quoted power usage and PSU wattage requirement as the mighty RTX 3090 Ti, although the possibility of upgrading the latter is limited to one of the four.

Ada Lovelace appoints a significant architectural gain over the RTX 30 series Ampere design. Both of the RT and Tensor cores (which enable ray tracing and AI/machine learning tools like DLSS, respectively), have both been redesigned to be faster and more efficient. Both of the four points, from Ampere, are similar to those used by the CUDA cores, as those used for everyday game running are higher across the board.

The RTX 40 series will not utilize PCIe 5.0 slots on next-gen motherboards, as Nvidia says PCIe 4.0 can still provide the cards with ample bandwidth. Thats fine, even with the upcoming AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs and chipsets, PCIe 5.0 graphics support on motherboards is several years off becoming the norm. The RTX 4090 and RTX 4080s will also work in the PCIe 3.0 slots of older mobos.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series features

Faster, more numerous cores are welcome, but since the RTX 40 series does end up being worth the money, it will most likely be due to its extensive feature upgrades.

The most interesting thing about DLSS is the actual version (the 2.4 version) of DLSS improves game performance by displaying each frame at a lower resolution, thus employing less horsepower. It then applies upscaling and custom anti-aliasing, which was later used by Nvidia in proving an AI algorithm how to create the best images to match your monitors'' native resolution. It''s powerful, most of the time, and DLSS 3 goes a long way further by insertion of new

As a result of this Optical Flow Accelerator, the Ada Lovelace architecture improves frames per second than previous DLSS versions. Both are very rare but unobservably difficult to perform, and DLSS 3 is aiming to increase efficiency by replacing motion vectors.

Drawbacks? One is that only a fraction of games that support (or that will) older DLSS versions will support DLSS 3 as well. Additionally, generation new frames increases input lag, which may be partially balanced out with Nvidia Reflex, but could hurt the future''s use in competitive situations. Lastly, DLSS 3 is still relying on this new Optical Flow Accelerator, which is unlikely to affect DLSS 3''s potential use, even if it launches alongside

Ray tracing is also being revamped, particularly in how Ada Lovelace GPUs increase the number of rendering ray traced graphics. I can''t explain this without getting too much dorky, but keep an eye on it.

Graphic processors excel when they''re performing lots of identical tasks in a row; it''s faster to, say, draw an object with many instances of a repeating texture than if it had more, but more varied and unique textures. Another advantage of ray tracing is that it requires that the GPU perform potentially of different tasks, enough that developers may manually order them in a processor-friendly manner.

Shader Execution Reordering, however, may be used by the GPU for determining these tasks in a straightforward row, thus allowing it to handle them more efficiently. Nvidia say this can improve overall performance with RT reduced by up to 25% to Ampere, which would not eliminate the FPS tax in most games but would certainly improve the running time.

RTX 40 GPUs will include AV1 encoding capabilities as standard. This will not only make your games run faster, but it is good news if youe into livestreaming or creating games clips from games footage. The AV1 format resembles the one real USP of their long-overdue Arc Alchemist graphics cards. So much for that disadvantage.

What is the RTX Remix, and what does it have to do with the RTX 40 series?

Nvidia''s new RTX Remix app has been launched for the RTX 4090/RTX 4080 release. Perhaps not, RTX Remix might be a major hit for upgrading previous PC games.

In a way, RTX Remix uses Ada Lovelaces'' AI and machine learning capabilities to simplify the process of creating HD mod packs for older games. With it, modders can import a game into the app and capture assets (like textures, geometry, and lighting) with a few clicks. These assets are then auto-converted into the USD file format, allowing the modder to make changes using RTX Remix''s various tools.

These include AI-powered texture tools that can upscale textures by up to 4x, or detect what type of material an old texture will represent, such as wood, metal, or otherwise, and automatically provide them with an appropriate, more detailed roughness or shininess. Through the use of RTX Remix to other applications, like Blender, Maya, Photoshop, and Adobe Substance, it is possible to create whole new models and see them take shape inside the mod in real time.

RTX Remix will export everything as a mod pack, which only needs to be unpacked in the same folder as the games.exe to launch. This is because the only prerequisites, according to Nvidia, are that the games are based on DirectX 8 or 9 and use a fixed function graphics pipeline.

Which version of the RTX 40 series will be built in? For starters, you''ll need one of these Ada Lovelace GPUs to produce the RTX Remix, although the processors aren''t available for older Nvidia graphics cards. And, although the resultant mod packs have no such hardware requirements, features such as ray tracing and DLSS 3 are clearly inciteting the use (or, let''s be honest, purchase) of an RTX 4090 or RTX

Will most modders want to make conversions that only the owners of this brand new, heavy-cost graphics card line can enjoy to the fullest extent? I don''t know, although anything that simplifies a tricky process like games modding is likely to attract eager new users as much as it can appeal to old veterans. Nvidia are also talking to Nexus Mods and Mod DB about hosting Remix creations, so promoting and finding these mods shouldn''t be more difficult than with handcrafted ones.
