Our Lightship platform has the capability to pinpoint the location and orientation of their user and embed AR content with centimeter-level precision.

These two benefits, referred to as localization and persistence, are the foundations of real world immersive AR. Today, developers desire to make more immersive real-world experiences with content that is linked to the environment around them. However, they must first understand exactly where their users are.

Lightship VPS answers this critical question by determining not only where users are in the world, but what their orientation is when they begin an experience and as they move inside.

What is the value of Lightship VPS?

Before VPS would localize users, we had to create a whole new type of map that was specifically designed for AR.

We collected information from Niantic developers, surveyors, and players to construct this map. We then processed these data to develop our AR map of the world. Once a location has been sufficiently scanned, it was able to activate it on Lightship VPS, and it becomes available to developers to build real-world AR experiences.

People can then travel to these VPS-activated locations and quickly localize their devices and interact with persistent AR content. Lightship VPS, with only a single image frame from the end users camera, has quickly and accurately identified a users specific, six-dimensional location.

Building a fresh kind of map

Building this 3D map of the world is one of the major challenges of AR, but it is one weve encountered with Niantic''s developers, surveyors, and players. For years, Niantic has invited dedicated players to be part of developing the game board by mapping the world with us. With 17 million of these points of interest known as Wayspots, along with millions of photos and edit contributions worldwide.

We know that we cant depend on the developer and player community alone to create a map that meets the needs of all developers. Weve also increased our efforts by developing a surveyor program in our six key launch cities, and we will continue to do so throughout the year.

Developers are able to understand which areas are best suited to their own experiences, so started today, were requesting them to use the Niantic Wayfarer app as part of their public beta. This will both enable developers to build experiences in the areas that matter most to them, and allows us to quickly scale our vision of developing a 3D map of the world.

With 30,000 locations globally, this product is in constant rise.

VPS is now available in over 30,000 locations with density in six major cities: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, and Tokyo. These locations are not just streetscapes or public landmarks, but also a collection of publicly accessible spaces that include parks, paths, landmarks, local businesses and more.

Each VPS-activated location is much more than a single point on a map. They are composed of multiple scans, creating localizable areas that are 10 meters in diameter. This level of detail ensures that no matter where a user is pointing their camera, no matter how long the area is, they will be able to accurately localize.

Start today with the Lightship VPS.

Developers may register for an account and download the Lightship ARDK Our ARDK and VPS are designed to work with iOS, Android, and Unity. Our VPS template is designed to help with the Lightship ARDK and Lightship VPS.
