Funcom is developing a multiplayer, open-world survival Dunegame

Funcom announced in 2019 that they intend to develop Dune games based on Frank Herbert''s sci-fi spice and sandworms novels. Upon completion of the 4X strategy game Dune: Spice Wars last month, it seems they''re intensifying their development on a new open world survival game set in the Dune universe.

Funcom''s "most engaging project yet," says the most recent information on job listings on the website. "Dune is calling and Funcom has answered. Will you?" reads the top of the page. Below, a clear explanation of what they want to do: a multiplayer open world survival game set on Arrakis.

This isn''t the first time we''ve heard of the project. VentureBeat reported in December last year that Funcom was developing a survival game set in the Dune universe with the help of Nukklear, a German company. The concept was also linked to Conan Exiles, a multiplayer survival game.

The number of job listings suggests that development is continuing and expanding, with Funcom looking for engineers, artists, designers, production staff and more.

Dune: Spice Wars is a fun game to watch, but Nic Reuben didn''t feel the game ragged mid-campaign during his review, but otherwise found it an impressive, polished, and pleasant surprise even in early access.
