How to Beat the Putrid TreeSpirit in Elden Ring War-Dead Catacombs

While you''re faced with a difficult battle, you''ll likely need summons from time to time. However, putting your Jellyfish, Glintstone Sorcerer, or Black Knife Tiche into the fight may vary greatly. However, you''ll need to collect the finest Spirit Ashes and an extensive upgrade material for them.

Both are possible in the Caelid War-Dead Catacombs. Not only will you get some Spirit Ashes while you in this dungeon, but you''ll also be able to get some Grave Glovewort and Ghost Glovewort to assist you in upgrading them. Additionally, if you like using gravity magic, there''s a fun spell to find.

Here''s how to make your way through War-Dead Catacombs and loot every item, as well as beating the dungeon boss, a Putrid Tree Spirit, without further ado.

War-Dead Catacombs Items

  • Grave Violet
  • Grave Glovewort
  • Ghost Glovewort
  • Golden Rune
  • Magic Grease
  • Silver Pickled Fowl Foot
  • Collapsing Stars
  • Golden Seed
  • Radahn Soldier Ashes
  • Redmane Knight Ogha Ashes

How to Make Your Way Through War-Dead Catacombs

The War-Dead Catacombs can only be accessed after you have fought with and slashed Starscourge Radahn. While at Radahn''s vast boss arena, you''ll need to travel to the northernmost section to see them.

Collect the Site of Grace and take the stairs to the top. You''ll see several spectral figures of Radahn''s Soldiers and Cleanrot Knights fighting each other. Ignore them, try to avoid losing their attention, and climb the stairs on your left.

You may collect a piece of Grave Glovewort before jumping down to the lower level. Down here, there are a lot of Scarlet Rot. Make sure you have Preserving Boluses, plenty of health flasks, or the ''Flame, Cleanse Me'' spell to stop you from dying to rot.

There will be extra spectral enemies down here, but there will also be a chest containing the Collapsing Stars spell. If you explore the rest of the room, a Golden Rune can be looted from the corpse in the middle, while a Silver Pickled Fowl Foot can be looted from the corpse in a distant corner of the room.

You can leave the room in the corner opposite the corpse that had the Silver Pickled Fowl Foot. There will be several Fanged Imps lurking there. At the back of the room, there is even a Grave Glovewort.

Return to the room of rot, and head straightward and slightly right towards the set of stairs. Go up these and you''ll encounter yourself in the first room in which spectral knights and soldiers were fighting.

The corpse in the middle of the room has x3 Magic Grease to loot, then go up the stairs to the far right corner of the room. Keep an eye on the soldier up here who will try to fire gravity magic projectiles at you, and go down the passage to your left.

Always be mindful of the soldiers once more, and there will be another archer at the end of the passage to take care of. Continue along this route to reach another room with soldiers and Grave Glovewort. Instead, continue straight on.

The next room will see another soldier falling, but more Grave Glovewort and an abundance of Grave Violet. Now, go back on yourself and to the left, you may jump through a small window and enter another one room.

A room with a second floor of Scarlet Rot, and a spectral Cleanrot Knight will be taken care of. The bodies can be looted in the room of Radahn Soldier Ashes.

Leave the small room and take a left. Once again, you''ll discover yourself in the first part of the dungeon, and there''ll be a few more Grave Glovewort. Bring the lever to your left and collect the Grave Violet here.

A Putrid Tree Spirit is the next boss who jumps out of the lever and runs directly down the stairs.

How to Reclaim the Putrid Tree Spirit of War-Dead Catacombs

The Putrid Tree Spirit is one of the most shady, rotting tree spirit adversaries in the Lands Between. If you''re low-levelled, you''ll have a tough time dealing with this one. Although, you did defeat Radahn, thus you''re also capable.

You don''t have multiple summons for this battle, and you have no need to have a huge arena to play around in. While the arena is relatively large, the Putrid Tree Spirit is also huge. Therefore, when you take the time to run from one end of the room to the other, keep in mind that the Putrid Tree Spirit will catch you and attack with ease.

Before dealing with strengths and weaknesses, the Putrid Tree Spirit has a few that you should be aware of. First, they have a fairly strong resistance to Magic, Poison, Scarlet Rot, and Bleed damage, and they can also absorb 40% of Holy damage. For their weaknesses, however, the spirit has no resistances whatsoever to physical attacks, and will suffer additional damage if used by Fire attacks.

A fight with a Putrid Tree Spirit will be a success for anyone who builds a Blackflame build or for anyone who wants to build a melee build. If your build isn''t quite up to scratch for this fight, don''t worry, as there are a few other ways to take the spirit on.

First things first, this spirit will fight Scarlet Rot, and it will even kill you. Be sure to use talismans like Kindred of Rot''s Exultation, or incantation such as ''Flame, Cleanse Me,'' to avoid your victims from becoming victim to the rot.

The Putrid Tree Spirit''s other abilities will be prone to breathing fire your way on occasion, much like the Ulcerated Tree Spirit of Fringefolk Hero''s Grave. You may escape the fire by running, and then reposition yourself at an angle so you may get away with it before the spirit has even concluded their move.

If you''re unlucky, the Putrid Tree Spirit will try other physical-oriented attacks primarly consist of slams, a tail whip, and a grab attack. If you think you''re being clever and sneaky by staying behind the spirit and attack, they''ve got you figured out. Whenever you spend too long by their back side, they''ll perform a tail whip to swiftly move you out of the way. You may dodge through the attack or flee and reposition.

The Putrid Tree Spirit uses its own head to slam the ground. You can easily see when they''re ending up for the attack, but dodge away to either side to avoid it. The worst attack of them all is one of the many swooping and diving attacks that the spirit uses. This is because if the move does not kill you, it''s a run against time before the rot does.

This strategy, similar to the slam attacks and other swooping dives that the spirit performs, requires a timely dodge. However, for much of this fight, due to the size of the spirit compared to the room and your character, you''ll likely be doing a lot of running as you avoid attacks and then land your own.

Don''t forget to summon your trusty Spirit Ashes if necessary. These can be difficult to deplete in some of the Putrid Tree Spirit''s health, and sooner or later, you''ll have halved the rotting tree.

The Putrid Tree Spirit will scatter a Golden Seed and Redmane Knight Ogha Spirit Ashes as your reward.
