At auction, The Wizard defends a Russian attack in Top-Notch Comics #5

The Wizard, a pulp-style superhero, was the first cover star of the series, and the second title was awarded by MLJ Magazines, the publisher who would eventually become known for Archie. The Wizard, which was created by Will Harr and Edd Ashe, Jr., and is the decedent of a long line of men who have fought for America in the wartime. He also has a brother in Naval Intelligence, and his fight against such plots is a fascinating read for the 2022

The Wizard''s early issues provide a glimpse into the country''s anxieties as World War approached. While actual nations were not named, the official stand-in names made it obvious. Famously, the Wizard saw Russia attacking Alaska and Japan in the first issue, citing that Soviet Union (called "Mosconians" in the story) causing damage to the Panama Canal. The situation was so depressing that fellow MLJ villain the Shield was able to intervene.

The Wizard became more a traditional superhero, with his pulp-style outfit and even adding a sidekick. However, these early issues, including the Wizard, Black Hood, and others, are going up for auction in the 2022 May 15-16 Sunday & Monday Comic Books Select Auction #122220.
